Beneath the Surface
In a world increasingly saturated by noise, Maya Jane Coles constructs her own interior architecture—spaces where sound is not an assault, but an invitation. Born in London to British and Japanese lineage, Coles moves deftly through the modern labyrinth of electronic music, layering each track with the precision of a draftsman tracing lines of unseen force. Under her given name, she sculpts house music that breathes: pulsing, meticulous, alive with the silent language of the night.
Yet it is through Nocturnal Sunshine, her shadow self, that Coles descends into deeper strata, weaving dubstep’s cavernous echoes with the delicacy of a weaver threading silk through steel. In collaboration with Lena Cullen as She Is Danger, she expands the form further, blending electronic dub with the urgency of lived experience.
